Home robot privacy
Most home robots carry cameras and microphones, and some can be driven by a remote person. Of the 26 robots listed for sale or taking pre-orders, we found the maker saying how data is handled for 11. For the other 15, we found nothing.
Three things to check on any robot
- Sensors. Cameras, microphones and depth sensors, and whether you can switch them off.
- Where data goes. Whether video and voice stay on the robot or go to the maker's cloud.
- What happens when you cancel. Whether recordings, maps and face data are deleted when you stop a subscription or return the robot, and how you ask for that.
- Who can connect. Whether a remote operator can see through the robot, and when. See teleoperation.
